The Architect's Newspaper

The Architect’s Newspaper’s September 2025 roundup surveys a range of upcoming architectural developments, highlighting projects that emphasize sustainability, cultural impact, and long-term community value. Together, they reflect how cities are using design to address growth, equity, and environmental responsibility.

Among the highlights is Portland’s OMSI District, a 24-acre mixed-use redevelopment centered on the Oregon Museum of Science and Industry. Led in part by Earthwise Design, the project includes the Center for Tribal Nations and foregrounds Indigenous leadership, ecological knowledge, and public waterfront access as key elements of the district’s future.

The piece profiles architect Jeff Roberts and his firm, Earthwise Design, which he launched in 2022 after a career at major sustainable-design firms.

Jeff has a deep interest in moving beyond conventional “sustainability” (which he argues has plateaued) toward a richer concept of resiliency, buildings, and developments, that not only conserve energy and materials but also support human wellbeing, community resilience, and Indigenous ecological knowledge.
